Tea Board set to initiate additional steps to ‘eliminate bad teas’

The Tea Board, which on Thursday introduced various steps to ensure that sub-common teas are not imported and dispersed in the country, is set to get additional ways to “eliminate negative teas” from the program.

According to PK Bezboruah, Chairman, Tea Board of India, just one of the means to do that would be to prevent production the beverage by November thirty each and every calendar year due to the fact article that the good quality of tea starts declining. The Tea Board, performing exercises the Tea Internet marketing Regulate Buy, had earlier directed all factories to prevent the manufacture of the beverage starting up early December to prevent output of inferior good quality of teas.

“We want to shut production by November thirty, but some producers, particularly in upper Assam do not like this suggestion. I come to feel you can get rid of a lot of substandard teas from the program (if we do this),” Bezboruah reported at the 48th biennial standard meeting of the Tea Association of India below on Friday.

This aside, he reported Tea Board would undertake a normal inspection to ensure that good quality parameters are adhered to. Reacting to a BusinessLine report, the Tea Board had on Thursday, directed all importers to ensure that origin of imported tea is outlined in all their sale invoices and not to move off imported teas as teas of Indian origin.

The Board also directed all distributors not to blend cheap and inferior good quality imported teas with Indian origin for domestic intake. “There are a variety of other ways that the Board will get to get out negative teas from the program,” he reported.

Concentration on generic campaign

According to Bezboruah, instead of doling out subsidies, the Tea Board should really concentrate additional on channelising the money allocated toward the generic campaign to endorse tea intake both equally in the domestic market as properly as exports. There is a need to have to enhance intake and the government, Tea Board, the sector and all other stakeholders should really occur collectively to endorse tea.

“We need to have to enhance both equally domestic intake as properly as exports. Although export is only two hundred mkg but it acts as a balancing variable,” he reported. Bezboruah also felt that both all teas should really be routed and offered on auction platforms or auctions should really be completed absent with.

According to him, the present program wherein the company has to route fifty for each cent of the generate via the auctions even whilst there are no required norms for the customers to resource tea, impacts the price discovery of teas.

“I come to feel when it arrives to auctions it should really be both all or absolutely nothing. If a consumer does not buy at auction then the price ranges instantly occur down and then these price ranges are utilized as a benchmark by customers at non-public gross sales,” he pointed out.
